A 4-year-old California boy survived being tossed from an SUV during a crash when he landed on a small patch of plants just a few feet away from traffic, authorities said.

The driver swerved in an attempt to avoid a tire tread, lost control of his 2002 Lincoln Navigator and crashed into a retaining wall near Magnolia Avenue around 8:15 p.m. The force of the crash sent his 4-year-old out of the car, despite being strapped into a car safety seat. The youngster landed on a soft bed of ice plants planted along the freeway. He was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center with minor injuries.
