Lorne Powers, 62, of Joshua Tree was speeding east on state Route 62, east of North Indian Canyon Drive, on his Harley-Davidson about 7:25 p.m. Saturday when he lost control and veered into the path of an oncoming Jeep, clipping the vehicle.

Powers and his passenger, 48-year-old Amanda Fridley of Bullhead City, Arizona, were flung onto State Route 62. Fridley died at the scene, and Powers was declared dead about an hour after the crash. The Jeep's driver, 20-year-old Joseph Prine, was uninjured in the crash. It hasn't been determined if drugs or alcohol played a role in the fatal crash.
