Authorities were working to identify the bodies, but Riley said it appears the victims, both males, were in their 20s. One was an instructor, he said.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating why a parachute did not open during a tandem jump on Saturday morning, killing the two men skydiving together.

The younger man had been jumping in tandem with a skydiving instructor, a veteran who had about 700 previous jumps, Dause said. The sheriff's office said Saturday the parachute did not open, and the two hit the ground.

“Before he got on the plane, he knelt down and prayed, made his peace with God, and then turned around and gave me a great big, huge hug,” Salazar said. “He said, ‘I love you, Mom,’ and then he got on the plane.”

Francine Salazar told a newspaper Sunday that her 18-year-old son was jumping for the first time and she paid to have the experience recorded. However, Federal Aviation Administration investigators took the tape and all the equipment used in the jump to determine what happened.

His dreams and aspirations were great but they were shattered on Saturday but before they went up, Francine said, Tyler said a prayer and made peace with God.

"Then he turned around and he gave me a hug, tightest hug I ever had, said, 'I love you mom,'" she said. "I said, 'I love you son," squeezed him and he got on the plane."

Turner made the jump with three friends who landed safely. His mother called him an adventurous spirit who was willing to try anything just about anything — including the jump that was on his bucket list of things to do in life.

 

Instructor In Deadly Skydiving Jump Near Lodi Was Not Certified

The instructed killed during a skydiving jump near Lodi on Saturday was not certified by the US Parachute Association, CBS News has learned.
