The CHP briefly shut down traffic in both directions, but reopened the northbound side by 1:30 p.m. All but one of the lanes on the southbound side have been reopened, snarling afternoon traffic.

The driver, a 25-year-old man from Monrovia; his wife, 22; and her brother's girlfriend, a 21-year-old from Santa Monica, died in the crash, which occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. near Escondido.

Following the crash, medics took the SUV’s other passengers, a 2-year-old girl, the driver’s 21-year-old brother and a 43-year-old woman, to hospitals for treatment of apparently minor injuries, according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt.
Names released of three killed in Interstate 15 crash near Escondido
The six were traveling in a 2001 Ford Explorer when the tread came off a rear passenger-side tire. The driver lost control, the vehicle smashed into the median and landed on its roof.
Details on the crash are limited, but it has been reported that shortly after 12:00pm, an SUV rolled over the median from the southbound lanes to the northbound lanes and at least two other vehicles were involved in the collision. Three people have been confirmed dead in the accident, and three others, including an infant, have been confirmed injured, though there may be more deaths and injuries that haven't been accounted for.
