Palm Desert man dies in crash in San Diego County

The pickup truck driver, identified as Fallbrook resident Makoto Kubota, 64, reportedly told the CHP he tried to swerve to his left but was unable to keep from crashing into the driver’s side of the Hyundai.

An 81-year-old Palm Desert man and his female passenger died Saturday after he tried to make a U-turn on Old Highway 395 near Fallbrook and his sedan was struck by a pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol and broadcast news sources.

The crash was reported at 2:57 p.m. near Pala Mesa Drive, according to a CHP dispatcher.

The two were in a red Hyundai Azera driving north on Old Highway 395 when the man made a U-turn onto the southbound side of the highway and was struck on the driver’s side by a green Toyota Tacoma that came up behind them, according to NBC7 in San Diego.

The pickup truck driver, identified as Fallbrook resident Makoto Kubota, 64, reportedly told the CHP he tried to swerve to his left but was unable to keep from crashing into the driver’s side of the Hyundai.

The man and his female passenger were transported to a hospital where both died from their injuries, according a report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. Kubota was taken to a hospital after he complained of chest and knee pain.

The CHP continued to investigate the incident.
