An 18-year-old skateboarder suffered serious injuries Saturday night when he rode into an intersection and was hit by a car in the Lake Murray neighborhood, San Diego police said.

The driver of a Nissan sedan was heading west on Navajo Road when the skateboarder started crossing the road at Cowles Mountain Boulevard against a red light, police Officer David Stafford said.

The two collided and the skateboarder suffered open leg fractures and scrapes, Stafford said. Paramedics took him to a hospital. The car driver, a woman in her early 20s, was not injured.
