Kaitlyn Benson 17, killed and one other 17-year-old girl injured after high-speed crash into pole in Oakland, California

A teenage girl died and another was injured in a high-speed wreck on an isolated street near the Port of Oakland early Friday morning, an area known for illegal street racing. Police officers responding to reports of an accident just after midnight on the 500 block of Maritime Street found that a vehicle had left the roadway and collided with a pole, officials said. The girls in the vehicle, both 17-year-olds from outside Oakland, were taken to a hospital, where the driver, who has been identified as Kaitlyn Benson, was later pronounced dead. Several cars were seen leaving the area following the accident, but no witnesses stayed to give statements, police said. Officials said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash and are investigating whether it was related to street racing.
