In an email sent to parents Monday, Palo Alto Unified School District Superintendent Glenn McGee said "we have lost three high school students to death by suicide this year"

The fatality initially shut down Caltrain service in both directions. The southbound tracks reopened around 7:15 a.m. and trains single-tracked through the area.

"Many of our students feel pressure to be successful and may even think that mental illness is a sign of weakness," McGee continued. "It is not, and it is a sign of strength to seek help for oneself or others. Please talk to your students and their friends and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings when experiencing difficult times."

According to Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn, a preliminary investigation indicates that the act was intentional. This is the eighth fatality on the Caltrain right of way this year. Last year there were 10 of which 8 were determined to be intentional.
A 15-year-old boy was hit by a northbound train.
