A man struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Richmond was identified Friday as 37-year-old Michael Shumake.

Shumake, a city resident, was hit by a westbound Capitol Corridor train near the Richmond station about 3:40 p.m. Thursday. He was facing away from the train when he was hit, and his death is being treated as an accident, authorities said.

Shumake "frequently crossed the tracks back and forth, so as dangerous as it is, he was familiar with it," said his uncle, the Rev. Andre Shumake of Richmond. "Unfortunately, the family is taking it very hard. It's just a tremendous loss."

Michael Shumake, the father of a teenage daughter, was unemployed but was looking for a job, his uncle said. "He never bothered anyone and just stayed to himself," Andre Shumake said. "He was just a decent guy."
