San Jose: Highway 101 commute turns messy after big rigs collide

The commute on northbound 101 from south county into San Jose turned a mess Wednesday morning after two big-rigs collided and blocked two lanes of traffic for a few hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. The collision involving three vehicles occurred at 6:43 a.m. on northbound Highway 101 between the Yerba Buena Road and Capitol Expressway exits, according to the CHP. A dump truck lost its front axle and hit a utility trailer being hauled by a Ford F-150, according to Officer Ryan Fifield of the CHP. The big rig then sideswiped a tanker hauling 80,000 gallons of wine, and the two big rigs became stuck together across the two far right lanes of traffic.
