San Jose: DUI suspect arrested after chain-reaction crash injures pedestrian

SAN JOSE -- A bicyclist was seriously injured in an apparent chain-reaction crash after a DUI driver hit a parked car south of downtown San Jose over the weekend, according to police and witnesses. The driver, whom San Jose police identified as Fidel Gomez, 31, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and hit-and-run, "based on the objective symptoms displayed by the driver," according to police. Saturday on Vine Street near Willow Street when a motorist "driving at an unsafe speed" lost control and hit a parked car, which then hit a person on the sidewalk, according to San Jose police. Witnesses told this newspaper that the victim may have been riding or walking with a bicycle when the crash occurred. Police said the driver briefly tried to flee the scene but was stopped and held by bystanders until officers arrived.
