A mechanic was crushed to death by a tractor in a workplace accident Thursday at a Volvo-owned construction equipment company in San Leandro, authorities said. The man was working beneath a front loader that had been lifted up on jacks in a yard of Volvo Construction Equipment and Services at 1944 Marina Boulevard, said Aisha Knowles, a spokeswoman for the Alameda County Fire Department. The vehicle slipped and fell on top of him around 9:30 a.m., Knowles said. Firefighters had to use a mechanical hoist to lift the tractor off the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The California Department of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the accident. A spokesman for the agency said the company, a dealership that sells large earth movers such as backhoes, has not previously been cited for any workplace safety violations.
