A Colorado man who was being airlifted to a hospital after a traffic accident confessed to medical personnel that he had just killed his wife whose body was later found by police, authorities said on Tuesday.

“I don’t know why he chose to talk to the flight crew,” Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling said. “It seems like they were the first ones he was able to converse with in his native language comfortably and we think that might have had something to do with it.”

After the early-morning slaying on Feb. 16 at the couple's apartment. 46-year-old Arturo Navarrete-Portillo told police he "kind of went crazy." So he jumped in his Toyota 4Runner, drove out of town and rear-ended an empty cattle truck on Highway 133, according to an arrest affidavit.

A man was driving a car in Carbondale when he collided with a tractor-trailer and sustained severe injuries. He was taken to a local hospital, but due to this seriousness of his injuries he was flown to a trauma center in Grand Junction. While he was being transported, the man told the flight crew that he had killed his wife in a Carbondale apartment earlier that day. Residents of the apartment found a dead woman with suspected knife wounds. The man is being held in protective custody while he recovers from his injuries.
