Bernadette Trujillo, 50, had a birthday Tuesday that she'll never forget. She was swept into the middle of a police chase and narrowly escaped injury.

Following a rush-hour chase and crash, Denver police Tuesday morning arrested three carjacking suspects who are also accused in a string of robberies and burglaries. Police are seeking two other suspects, spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

Trujillo drove to work in Denver and parked on Raritan Street, just off West Alameda Avenue, when she heard sirens screaming.

Trujillo was reaching into her Mazda to grab items when a black Kia SUV came screeching around the corner, with a Denver police SUV hot on its tail.

The police SUV bumped the Kia from behind, spinning it into Trujillo's Mazda. When the Kia came to a stop, the police SUV broadsided the smaller SUV, banging it into the Mazda.

Trujillo was within an arm's length of the mayhem.

"I felt like my life was flashing in front of me," Trujillo said. "I was just terrified. I was almost crushed."

More police cars immediately arrived and officers, with guns drawn, took three suspects into custody.

The incident started overnight on West Alaska Drive when a gold Honda Accord was stolen. People in the Honda attempted an armed carjacking about 8 a.m. near West 5th Avenue and Xavier Street, but were unsuccessful. Officers spotted the Honda a short time later and pursued it, but lost track, Jackson said.

Officers then spotted a black Kia and recognized people inside as the carjacking suspects, Jackson said.

Police pursuit of the Kia led to West Alameda and Raritan Street, where Trujillo narrowly escaped injury.

Police did not say whether a weapon was recovered. The Honda was recovered about noon at West 11th Avenue and Mariposa Street. There were no reported injuries.

Jackson said the suspects are believed to be involved in a metro burglary and robbery ring over the past two months, mostly hitting small businesses, convenience stores, and victims on the street.

Trujillo, who remained shaken after the near miss, said police were not overly aggressive with the suspects, but she's flabbergasted at how they reacted to her.

"Police did not take into consideration people that are out here on the street," Trujillo said.

She said an officer threatened to arrest her when she began taking photos at the scene. Police also told Trujillo they're not responsible for the damage to her Mazda, she said.

"I think it's totaled," Trujillo bemoaned.

Trujillo skipped work after the incident. Her husband picked her up and took her home to celebrate her birthday.
