Stephen Lombardo, of Lakewood, was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 287 at around 5 a.m. when his Pontiac Grand Prix crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with a semi that tried to avoid the crash, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid said.

Lombardo was able to get out of the car, which burst into flames moments later. He was treated and transported to Medical Center of the Rockies with serious injuries, Reid said, adding that he was cited for careless driving and driving under the influence.
