The Pathfinder driver, later identified as Staples, died at the scene. He was wearing a bandana covering his face and gloves on both hands.

Information wasn’t immediately available about why deputies were chasing Staples. 
Romeo Roddrick Staples, 20, died and his passenger, Kebreceia J. Thompson, 20, was transported in serious condition to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville following the 10:30 p.m. collision on St. Johns Avenue in Putnam County. The driver of the other vehicle, Arthur Chloen Elzie Young, 18, also was transported in serious condition to UF Health Shands Hospital.  Staples was driving a Nissan Pathfinder at a high rate of speed, being chased by sheriff’s deputies in pursuit. The SUV crossed the center line and collided head-on with Young. The Pathfinder’s owner had called the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office to report the SUV had been stolen on Friday.
