FHP: Scooter turns in path of car in Fleming Island

The Florida Highway Patrol says a 64-year-old motor scooter rider was critically injured when hit by a car Friday afternoon on U.S. 17 at Floyd Street.

A car was heading southbound on U.S. 17 sometime after noon when a scooter trying to cross the roadway pulled out in front of the car and was hit, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

ay Clifford McKinley was trying to turn left onto U.S. 17 from the eastbound lanes of Floyd Street when he was stuck by a southbound Mazda Protege about 12:15 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.
Jay McKinley was turning left onto U.S. 17 from Floyd Street when he was struck by a passenger car driven by 27-year-old Ashley Havens. McKinley was taken to UF Health Jacksonville in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Havens was not injured, and neither was her 2-year-old passenger. The crash is still under investigation.
