A single-engine plane crash landed behind the Palatka Lowe's store on Friday morning and authorities try to figure out what cause the planed to go down about 1,500 feet short of the runway at Kay Larkin Field. Authorities say two men aboard the Cessna 400 were injured -- both flown by air ambulance to UF Health/Shands in Gainesville, where the passenger was reported to have life-threatening injuries. A Palatka police corporal who was first to reach the downed plane said the pilot was lucid, but the passenger was almost unresponsive, only making slight movements. Their names were not released pending notification of their families. Deputies say the plane went down shortly before 11 a.m. near a pond behind the Lowe's. The plane struck a grassy embankment and bounded into a stack of pallets. No one on the ground was injured. The Florida Highway Patrol says the plane took off from St. Augustine earlier Friday morning. Lt. Justin Asbury said the crash may have been the result of failed landing attempt, where the pilot decided not to land at the last minute but couldn't get the plane back into the air. Palatka police, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol were holding the scene until the National Transportation Safety Board arrives to take over the investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration registry shows the plane is owned by Carrara Richard of Palm Coast.
