“I tried to find the guy,” Paternoster said. “I searched the cab. I had to get the passenger door open.”

“Even with the regulator it took three or four tries before he would come out,” said Hernandez. “He was very scared to trust us at that point. He didn’t want to leave his safety zone of that air pocket,” added Paternoster. “So after I knew he had that, I grabbed his pant leg and his shirt and she grabbed me and we all went out,” Hernandez continued.

Divers speak out after rescuing truck driver from canal

Fire Rescue crews raced against time as their station was more than 28 miles from the scene, all the while fearing the worst. Thankfully for the driver, divers knew exactly what to do once they received the distress call. "I mean it was dangerous, but this is what we train for," said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue diver Lt. Brandy Paternoster.

A 40-year-old truck driver was rescued by Miami-Dade Fire rescue after the cab of his truck ended up submerged in a canal 20 miles west of Krome Avenue. The driver suffered no physical injuries during crash and water rescue.
