Julie Smith, 41, Scarlett Smith, 5, Jaxon Smith, 11, and Josephine Fay, 76, killed in collision on State Road 429 near Celebration, Florida

Troopers said a truck rear-ended a van when traffic on the roadway began to slow. Officials said the van, which had a family of eight inside, overturned.

Three people in that van were killed – a 5-year-old girl and her 41-year-old mother from Whitman and a 76-year-old from South Weymouth.

A total of eight family members from Massachusetts were inside the rental van at the time of the crash.

The town of Whitman is mourning the painful loss of a little girl, her mother and grandmother who were all killed while on a trip to Disney World.

Employees at the Carousel Family Fun Center organized an event in the family’s honor and said they often came to the skating rink for fun. A percentage of the admission price for each skater was donated to the Smith family memorial.

“The Fay/Smith Families greatly appreciate the outpouring of support and prayers as we process the events of this horrific tragedy,” the family said in a statement Thursday.

A wake is being held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church in Weymouth for 41-year-old Julie Smith, her 5-year-old daughter, Scarlett, her 11-year-old son, Jaxon, and her 76-year-old mother, Josephine Fay.
