Rita Cole, 68, killed, Levi Kelley, 29, critically injured, transported to hospital, after a pickup and car collide on State Road 407 near Titusville.

Rita Cole, 68, of Viera was killed in a head-on crash at about 2:50 p.m. today on State Road 407, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Cole was driving westbound on State Road 407 in a 2011 Lexus, as Levi Kelley, 29, of New Symrna Beach,was traveling eastbound on State Road 407 in a 2000 Toyota pickup truck.

For an unknown reason, Cole attempted to pass another vehicle that was in front of her, in a no passing zone.

As Cole traveled into the eastbound lanes, a van in front of Kelley was able to move out of the way, and she could not react in time. The front of Cole’s Lexus struck the front of Cole’s Toyota pickup truck.

Cole was pronounced dead at the scene and Kelley was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

Neither Cole nor Kelley were wearing seat belts, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. This crash remains under investigation.
