Troopers say the car caught fire, but Calderon was able to get out of the car with Ruiz before the car was completely destroyed.

Driver Andres Calderon, 21, is hospitalized and passenger Virginia Marie Ruiz, 20, is dead, following a single-car crash on County Road 65B near Cane Creek Road in Quincy, Florida. Calderon lost control, went onto the shoulder and crashed into a line of trees, which caused the car to catch fire. He was able to pull himself and Ruiz free of the fire, where they were both airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Ruiz passed away at the hospital and Calderon is still in critical condition. Neither victim was wearing proper restraints.
