Driver dies, passenger critical after I-75 crash in Hernando Co.

A driver was killed and a passenger was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash on I-75 in Hernando County early Thursday, authorities said. According to the Hernando County Fire Rescue, the vehicle left the northbound side of the highway near mile marker 303 around 1 a.m. and struck a tree. That person was taken by helicopter to the trauma center at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. First responders found the driver dead at the scene and the passenger badly injured. Crews used heavy equipment to cut away wreckage that had entrapped the passenger.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, an Infinity Q50 driven by 25-year-old Elnora Akia Jones was heading north in the inside lane around 12:58 a.m. Jones, “for reasons unknown,” drove the car off the road, onto the shoulder and into a tree, a highway patrol report stated.
