Pedestrian, 73, killed in crash in Manatee

A 73-year-old man died  Tuesday morning when he stepped onto a road and was struck by a car in Manatee County About 8:21 a.m., Elizabeth Joan Ganim, 18, of Fort Myers, was driving a 2001 Nissan Altima westbound in the left lane on State Road 64 approaching Greyhawk Boulevard as John Hughes Frey of Bradenton was standing in the center grass median facing north, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Ganim failed to observe Frey, who did not see the car, and then he walked into the path of the Nissan. She did not have the headlights on, only the parking lights, according to the FHP. The Nissan struck Frey who landed partially on the road and the north grass shoulder. Ganim, who was not hurt, drove to the north grass shoulder facing northwest. Her car left skid marks on the road.
