Cape Coral child dies in I-75 traffic crash

Five-year-old Nathan Griffith of Cape Coral died from his injuries after a crash Monday morning in Pasco County, Florida according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Griffith and two other passengers in the Impala are being treated at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the FHP said. Griffith suffered minor injuries, while his wife, Sheila A. Griffith, 27, is in serious condition and their daughter, 7-year-old girl Marissa Griffith, suffered minor injuries.

Troopers said Monday afternoon that Grace's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Nathan Griffith had been secured in a booster seat in the back of the Impala, according to the Highway Patrol.

The Griffith family was returning to Cape Coral on I-75 after a vacation in Tennessee when their car was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Caitlin Grace. The impact caused Grace's vehicle to flip, and the Griffith vehicle to be pushed onto the shoulder of the road. 5-year-old Nathan Griffith was fatally injured. The driver Alexander Griffith and passenger Sheila Griffith suffered serious injuries, and 7-year-old Marissa Griffith suffered minor injuries. Caitlin Grace was also hospitalized in serious condition. All members of the Griffith family were wearing seatbelts. This accident is still under investigation.
