12 kids sent to the hospital after school bus accident in Lakeland.

A Polk County school bus accident sent 12 Crystal Lake Middle School students to the hospital Thursday morning with minor injuries.
A Polk County school bus accident sent 12 Crystal Lake Middle School students to the hospital Thursday morning with minor injuries. It happened around 8:10 a.m. at the intersection of South Crystal Lake Drive and US 98 in Lakeland. Alicia Delgado said it wasn't the collision that sent her running to the scene Thursday morning, but what she heard shortly after. Authorities say a Subaru was two cars behind a school bus carrying 30 Crystal Lake Middle School students. The bus stopped at the railroad crossing, as required, and that's when the Subaru driver started to pass. The bus let off the brakes and hit the Subaru that was moving back to the right lane. Twelve of the Crystal Lake students were transported to the hospital, but by the afternoon a Lakeland Regional Medical Center spokeswoman said they had all been discharged. To Delgado, Thursday's accident is just more confirmation of what she's claimed for months. She says the intersection is dangerous and people need to slow down. Lakeland Police Department’s Sgt. Gary Gross says that number is not especially high. "It may look like they're going fast because it's a major intersection but as far as Crystal Lake Drive, it's like anywhere else in the city," Gross said. "I wouldn't say it's excessive - two a month - but I can see that being a perception with it being a major roadway." The driver of the Subaru in the accident with the school bus was cited for careless driving. He was not injured.
