Troopers say black ice caused fatal I-85 car accident

"The roads weren't wet except in that one spot," Beam said. "One witness said he stopped to try and help him get out of the car after the wreck and that he saw another car spin."

Drivers question if NCDOT did enough to prevent deadly I-85 crash

But Tadlock wants to know why it wasn't done beforehand, since Troopers say the pavement temperature was 31 degrees when the crash happened. "Why wouldn't you salt it if you know the temperature is going to get down below freezing?" Tadlock asked.

Widow of man killed in I-85 crash files lawsuit against NCDOT

Berhe, Horner and his law firm Hamilton, Stephens, Steele and Martin have filed a lawsuit against the North Carolina Department of Transportation because, the lawyers says, the incident never should have happened. "Everyday I handle this case, I continue to be more and more shocked. This husband and father did not need to die," Horner said.
Berhane Gebretsadik, 33, ran over a patch of black ice as he was returning home from work at 2:29 a.m. Investigators state that the ice caused Gebretsadik’s car to slide off the right side of the road close to mile marker 25. Gebretsadik’s 2008 Lincoln then collided with a tree and subsequently caught fire. The Department of Transportation put out salt and sand on the spot after the accident. The black ice stretched approximately 200 yards. Gebretsadik was a hired driver and that alcohol was not a factor. Investigators said that Gebretsadik was most likely driving the speed limit and that the black ice was the reason his car skidded.
