Shooting in Crisp County closes Interstate 75

G.B.I. Special Agent in Charge Perry Howard said around 4 p.m. Ashburn Police tried to pull over a car for a tag violation. The car sped away, and when police followed, the suspects started shooting at officers. The chase ended up on I-75 in Crisp County and included several different law enforcement agencies. When the chase stopped, officers found the driver of the car dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A female passenger in the car also appeared to be shot, but her injuries were not life-threatening. She was taken to Crisp Regional Medical Center.

It happened near mile marker 99 in Crisp County. According to a report, the incident began when an Ashburn Police officer went to conduct a traffic stop on a car without a tag near mile marker 82 on I-75. The driver of the car did not stop, and a chase began on the Interstate. Officials said the driver of the car was injured, but not killed, and taken to the hospital. A passenger in the car, who was also shot, was pronounced dead.
