Fatal crash causes traffic nightmare on I-85

The crash happened around 5 a.m. near the intersection with Hamilton Mill Road, just northeast of the I-985 split.

UPDATED: Air Force football legend Dee Dowis killed in Gwinnett crash

The Colorado Springs Gazette first reported Dowis’ death. Dowis lived in South Carolina and worked as a pharmaceutical representative for Pfizer, according to the Gazette. He was 48.

Dowis set the NCAA record for career rushing yards for a quarterback with 3,612. He was sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1989, when he was the fifth player in NCAA history to rush and pass for more than 1,00 yards in a season.

Former Heisman Trophy candidate dies in I-85 crash

Dowis is a former quarterback for the United States Air Force Academy football team from 1986-1989. He was in the running for the Heisman Trophy in '89 finishing 6th.
