Over $15M to settle police-involved crash that killed Michigan man

Hawaii County has agreed to pay a $15.1 million settlement to the family of a Michigan man hit and killed by a police patrol car, officials said.

Jeffrey C. Surnow, 63, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, was struck and killed by a police car while biking in South Kohala, Hawaii, on Sunday. The on-duty officer reported the accident at 6:25 a.m. Sunday. Surnow was pronounced deceased a few hours later. A negligent homicide investigation was launched, and the officer, 30-year-old Jody Buddemeyer, was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide.
