I-255 closed for hours after fatal crash near Humbert Road on Wednesday night

The Illinois State Police District 11 Office said Unit 1 was driving the wrong way on I-255 and hit Unit 2 and there was a fatality in that vehicle. Another unit was also involved.

Buford was known by friends and family as "Buddy" and lived in Alton with his girlfriend and two children, a 5 year old daughter and 1 1/2 year old son.

The name of the female driver has not yet been released, and she is not charged. She sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis by helicopter.

The plaintiff claims Runtz was southbound in the northbound lane of the highway and collided head-on with a car driven by Buford. Varble was allegedly driving behind the Buford vehicle and crashed into its rear end.
