One person was hospitalized early Tuesday after, while driving on icy road conditions, their vehicle spun out and hit the wall on the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/I-94) in Chicago.

The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway near Division Street, said a Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sgt.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, was taken with non-life-threatening injuries to an area hospital, said Collins. The person’s gender and age were not immediately known.

The crash was likely caused by the motorist driving too fast on icy road conditions, Collins said. At least two lanes of the expressway were closed for more than 30 minutes.

Strong winds and record cold temperatures plunged Chicago into a dangerous deep freeze Monday, wreaking havoc on the roadways. More than 370 motorists had to be helped off roads by Illinois Tollway workers, the agency said.

The Illinois State Police is investigating the crash.
