Police: Man, Teenager Die After Irving ParkCrash

(STMW) — A man and a teenage boy died after a single-vehicle crash early Sunday in the Irving Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. Police initially said the driver had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and the teenager had multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The driver, a 21-year-old man, and the 16-year-old boy sitting in the passenger seat were both taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where both were later pronounced dead, police said. Later, police said the hospital couldn’t confirm that the injuries were gunshot wounds. The vehicle was traveling northbound in the 3700 block of North California about 5:15 a.m. when it struck a planter, according to Chicago Police.

Both had suffered gunshot wounds in addition to injuries caused by the crash. An autopsy found he died of blunt force injuries to the torso from the crash, with multiple gunshot wounds listed as a contributing factor. Garcia, of National City, California, was pronounced dead at Masonic at 5:43 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. Sanchez, of the 2900 block of North Elston, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:02 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Alan Garcia; and a 16-year-old passenger identified as Roberto Sanchez, were both taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Police initially said it appeared the 21-year-old was shot in the head and the boy, a passenger in the car, may have also suffered several gunshot wounds. But doctors at the hospital later told police that the two may not have been shot but had extensive injuries from the crash.
