Father, Teen Daughter Killed in Lake County Crash

A suburban father and his teen daughter were killed and three others were injured in a tragic crash in Lake County over the weekend, officials said. Saturday near the intersection of Route 132 and Route 45 near Lindenhurst. Christopher Winiewicz, 50, and his 15-year-old daughter Haylie, both of whom were in the Kia, were killed in the crash, according to the Lake County coroner'€™s office. A preliminary investigation revealed a Nissan was traveling northbound with two people inside when it hit a Kia carrying three people as the Kia turned onto Route 132. A GoFundMe page was set up to help the Winiewicz family and has raised nearly $20,000 in 17 hours.

It was very emotional," said Kim Mena, a Grayslake North High School student.On Saturday afternoon, sophomore Haylie Winiewicz was with her sister and father when their car was hit by another vehicle. Haylie's older sister, who also attends the school, survived the crash."I didn't want to tear up, and I was. Haylie and her father Christopher were killed."We've lost two residents, two community members, to a horrific, tragic incident," said Chief Thomas Jones, Lindenhurst Police Dept.Lindenhurst police continue to investigate the accident. A suburban high school student and her father are being remembered Monday after they were killed in a crash over the weekend in far north suburban Lindenhurst.Counselors from throughout the district comforted students and staff grieving the loss of one of Haylie Winiewicz, a popular varsity cheerleader at Grayslake North High School.

Illinois man sentenced in reckless homicide case

Christopher Romano, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving instead of reckless homicide under the negotiated deal. He will begin his jail sentence in November and also will serve two years' probation.
