Trucker Seriously Hurt When 4 Semis Collide On I-65

A trucker was seriously hurt when four semi trucks collided on Interstate 65 in northwest Indiana Wednesday morning, closing the highway for four hours.

A trucker was seriously hurt when four semi trucks collided on Interstate 65 in northwest Indiana Wednesday morning, closing the highway for four hours.

The crash happened just after 9 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-65, about a mile north of the State Route 10 exit, Indiana State Police said.

The driver of a 2006 Volvo semi hauling salt for Summit-based UROL Express failed to see traffic slowing because of a separate crash in front of him, police said.

The Volvo went off the left side of the roadway and onto a raised, snow-covered area, police said. The driver over-corrected and hit a trailer hauled by a Freightliner in front of him, police said.

The Volvo started to jackknife, and its own trailer also hit the Volvo’s truck, crushing it and pinning the driver inside between the two trailers, police said.

A man driving the Volvo had to be cut out of the wreckage and was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point, Ind., with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The Freightliner was also pushed into a Kenworth semi, which was then pushed into a second Freightliner driven by a 26-year-old Chicago man, police said. Those drivers were all wearing seat belts and were not hurt.

The wreck closed the I-65 for four hours, police said.

The crash happened near Roseland, Ind., which is located about 20 miles south of Crown Point.
