Semi hits, kills 11-year-old boy in Whiting.

Police say an 11-year-old boy died after he was hit by a semitrailer on a busy city street in northwestern Indiana.

Officials say a boy, believed to be 11 years old, was struck and killed by a semi Wednesday afternoon in an apparent hit-and-run in Whiting, Ind.

Police said two brothers were walking home from school when the younger brother attempted to cross a street near 119th Street and Indianapolis Boulevard.

The older brother said he tried to stop his younger brother, later identified as Angel Villafuerte, but the younger brother was hit by a semi, which witnesses say did not stop.

According to Whiting Police Chief Stephen Miller, police managed to stop a flatbed semi about 3 miles from the scene and were inspecting the truck for evidence and questioning the driver.

Indianapolis Boulevard was shut down Wednesday afternoon and Indiana State Police are investigating.
