Drowning was the cause of death of a woman who drove her SUV into Fall Creek on Friday morning, according to an autopsy today. The Marion County coroner’s office ruled that Miranda Dermanelian, 25, Indianapolis, died of asphyxia due to drowning, according to a news release today from the Division of Law Enforcement of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Dermanelian’s vehicle was headed south on Allisonville Road near Binford Boulevard when it ran a red light and then left the roadway at about 8:06 a.m., according to Capt. Rita Reith of the Indianapolis Fire Department. IFD crews arrived at the scene a few minutes later, Reith said, and had a rescue boat in the water by 8:20 a.m. But bystanders who tried to help the motorist said Dermanelian’s vehicle quickly sank in the water. After IFD pulled Dermanelian from her submerged vehicle, she was taken in critical condition to IU Health Methodist hospital, where she later died. Results from toxicology tests could take several weeks to report, the DNR release said. Indiana conservation officers are continuing to investigate the incident.
