Emergency personnel were on the scene of a crash Thursday morning where two children were struck by a school bus, police dispatchers said. Police say a Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation school bus was involved in the crash in the 2500 block of West Chaucer Drive around 7:37 a.m. Police said two Taylorsville Elementary students had been hit. The crash happened near Taylorsville, just south of where Interstate 65 and US 31 cross . Police say one child, a 9-year-old girl, was taken by medical helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. A second child, a 6-year-old boy, was taken by ambulance to Columbus Regional Hospital. A family member said the children are siblings. Family member Justin Schulz say another sibling came running back from the bus stop and told him what had happened. He said the bus ran over the girl’s leg, he believes. He and the rest of the family, including the 6-year-old boy who was treated and released from the hospital, went to visit the girl at Riley Hospital. Family members say the boy ended up under the bus as well, but the wheel did not run him over. He was able to crawl out with just a few scratches and bruises. Other students who were on board at the time of the crash were transferred onto another bus and taken to school, school officials said. The bus remained on scene Thursday morning. Police had closed off the area to investigate. Investigators say at this point, it appears the two children ran out in front of the bus.
