Five people were killed in a chain-reaction crash after a semitrailer slammed into the back of another vehicle in a construction zone in western Indiana, Indiana State Police said Friday. The crash caused a chain reaction and ignited a fire, said Sgt. The driver of the semitrailer that caused the crash was also killed, along with a driver in another vehicle. The crash, involving at least two semitrailers and three cars, happened late Thursday night when one of the trucks rear-ended another vehicle on Interstate 65 near Lafayette, about 60 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

It happened on Interstate 65 near the State Route 43 exit, approaching a construction zone. Police say a semi was going too fast before hitting a van, pushing a car off the road and crashing into another semi. Two adults and a child in the van were killed, as well as a driver of another car. The semi driver that caused the accident also died.

Northbound I-65 was expected to reopen early Friday morning but officials said southbound I-65 could be closed for several hours. Northbound and southbound I-65 was closed from the 178 exit to the 175 exit.

Police: Lake Zurich man among 5 dead in I-65 crash

LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Indiana State Police say a woman and her two young sons were among five people killed in a chain-reaction crash caused by a semitrailer driven by a Lake Zurich man on Interstate 65 near Lafayette. Police say the crash late Thursday killed 47-year-old Jill Buck of Greenwood, along with her sons 8-year-old A.J. and 10-year-old Branson. Jill Buck was driving an SUV that police say was hit from behind by a semi that didn't slow down while approaching a construction zone. Also killed in the crash were the semi's driver, 34-year-old Pankiv Ruslan of Lake Zurich and the driver of another car, 41-year-old Mikhail Stepanov of Lafayette. The crash caused a fire involving the semi and the SUV. The highway about 50 miles northwest of Indianapolis was closed for hours.

A Honda Pilot and a Toyota Yaris slowed behind the semi. His passenger, 31-year-old Tatiana Yuryevna Stepanova of Lafayette, was injured.The Honda spun into the median.
