Police release more details about driver impaled in crash

“The first responders worked hard,” said Zeman, as she recalled watching it from her home. “I thought ‘Why aren’t they getting the person out?’ and, later, hearing the story (of the impalement), the way she was pinned in there.”

Rescuers cut the pipe on both sides of Cummings’ body before transporting her to UIHC, where doctors surgically removed the pipe. 
27-year-old Kelsey Cummings was driving westbound on Zika Avenue near Ellis Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Thursday when her car crossed the centerline and crashed into a galvanized gate. A pipe, 2 inches in diameter, passed through the front of the car and into her pelvis. It took 90 minutes for the rescuers to get the victim out of the vehicle. Cummings was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for surgery. Cedar Rapids Police are still investigating the accident.
