A 27-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man was being held in Wyandotte County jail Thursday morning after a 7-year-old girl died when the man allegedly crashed into a van while fleeing police.

A 28-year-old Kansas man has been sentenced to more than 20 years in the death of an 8-year-old girl who was killed when he crashed into her minivan while fleeing from police.

Murphy’s family pleaded for leniency and said that he feared police and was afraid that he would be harmed if he pulled over. The accident was one of two accidents that caused KCK police to suspend their pursuit policy.
A 27-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man was being held in Wyandotte County jail Thursday morning after a 7-year-old girl died when the man allegedly crashed into a van while fleeing police. The crash at North 63rd Street and Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kan., killed Jasmine Rodriguez of Kansas City, Kan. The crash also injured two boys, a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old, and a 35-year-old woman who were in the van with her. The 27-year-old man was being held on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter that was done in the commission of another crime, but he has not been charged. The man was headed north on 63rd Street when he allegedly ran a red light and struck the minivan driven by the woman. Kansas City, Kan., police had been pursuing the vehicle before the crash.
