Two people were killed in a Monday night crash in Leavenworth County that shut down a state highway for around five hours, authorities said. The crash occurred at 6:05 p.m. on K-16 highway about eight miles northwest of Tonganoxie. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a 1997 Ford pickup truck that was westbound on K-16 crossed left of center, striking a trailer being pulled by a 2008 Ford pickup. The 1997 Ford pickup then struck a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban that was traveling in the eastbound lane. Debris from the impact of the 1997 Ford and the Suburban then struck a 2007 Chevy Silverado that was in the eastbound lane. The driver of the 1997 Ford pickup, identified as Bart H. Kissinger, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kissinger, who was alone in his truck, wasn’t wearing a seat belt, the patrol said. Also killed was the driver of the Suburban, identified as Brandon L. McKinney, 39, of Tonganoxie. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The patrol said McKinney was wearing a seat belt. The driver of the 2008 Ford pickup, Gerald L. Hartshorn, 66, of Tonganoxie, was reported uninjured. He was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said. A passenger in the 2008 Ford pickup, Laura L. Hartshorn, 53, of Tonganoxie, also was reported uninjured. She was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said. The driver of the Silverado, Ronald D. Grover, 59, of Bonner Springs, was reported uninjured. The patrol said he was wearing his seat belt. K-16 highway was shut down while the crash was investigated. The road was reopened shortly before midnight.
