Westwood police are looking for a thief who up crashed a stolen car Wednesday afternoon.

Westwood police are looking for a thief who up crashed a stolen car Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect wrecked out the vehicle on the 5100 block of Mission Road and ran away.

People who live nearby are being careful with the knowledge that the thief could be hiding out somewhere in the area.

On Wednesday night, police drove around the neighborhood shining their spotlight at houses looking for the suspect.

The incident unfolded before 2:30 p.m., when a Fairway police officer saw a speeding car on Shawnee Mission Parkway. That officer tried to stop it, but the car ended up crashing into a pole. The thief and a woman who was in the car ran away from police.

Police spotted the suspect at 50th and State Line Road where he took off into some backyards. The suspect is described as a Hispanic man in his 30s, last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and carrying a backpack.

Police launched a search that forced a nearby school to go on lockdown for a short time. However during that search they couldn't find him.

As far as the wrecked car, it was stolen around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after the owner left the vehicle running and unattended.
