Woman killed in vehicle-pedestrian accident was Newton teacher

The road where she was hit is a busy paved road, which is technically considered a part of rural Harvey County, Flavin said. There is not a wide shoulder along the road, she said, though bikers and runners frequently use the road.

Crystal Stauffer, a physical education teacher at a Newton middle school, has been identified as the pedestrian who died after being struck by a car Tuesday near Newton, the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Stauffer, 28, is thought to have been out jogging when she was hit about 4 p.m., said Melissa Flavin, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

A vehicle driving west on Northwest 12th, between Meridian and West, struck Stauffer. That’s just west of Newton. The driver, a 40-year-old Halstead woman, was not injured, police said.

Stauffer was taken in critical condition to the Newton Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Officials with the Newton school district said Stauffer was employed at the district’s Santa Fe 5/6 Center, a middle school.
