One person has died following a series of multi-vehicle accidents Tuesday morning on Louisiana 1 in Donaldsonville. Fog is suspected to be a factor.

State police say three separate traffic accidents over a mile-long stretch of foggy highway involved an estimated 20 vehicles and left one person dead and several injured in southern Louisiana.

The accidents were reported around 5 a.m. Tuesday on Louisiana Highway 1 near the town of Donaldsonville, roughly 40 miles west of New Orleans. Several injuries were reported but a trooper says none are believed life-threatening.

A state police spokesman says the fatality happened in a crash involving six vehicles.

Police stated that there is a sugar mill in the area and several of the vehicles involved were hauling sugar cane. It appeared that a car had rear-ended a sugar cane truck in one of the accidents.

Police expected the highway to be closed for several hours.
