Mother and 3-year-old daughter die in canal crash

According to Louisiana State Police, Ashley Worrell, 31, was driving a 2008 Nissan Titan north on Hwy. 315 when she lost control of her vehicle and entered a canal. The vehicle overturned and was submerged under water.

A 3-year-old girl and her mother died Wednesday afternoon (July 16) after their car plunged into a canal in Terrebonne Parish, authorities said. Delaney Lirette and her mother, Ashley Worrell, 31, both of Theriot, were pulled from their submerged vehicle about 5 p.m. along Louisiana Highway 315, according to a Louisiana State Police release. Worrell was heading north on Highway 315 in her 2008 Nissan Titan when the vehicle veered off the right side of the highway, authorities said. As she tried to return to the road, her vehicle spun counterclockwise across the highway and off the left side into a canal, police said, where it overturned. Worrell and her daughter were pulled from the vehicle by volunteer firefighters, police said. Worrell was pronounced dead at the scene, while her daughter was pronounced dead at Terrebonne General Hospital. A child seat was found in the vehicle, but police are unsure if the mother and daughter were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The results of a routine toxicology test are pending, police said.
