After deadly gyrocopter crash at Reserve airport, FAA searches for clues

Gyrocopters are slim, light helicopters equipped with a both propeller and a rotary blade. They are classified as experimental because they often are built by amateurs from kits, and the FAA does not certify either the kit or the builder.

Reserve gyrocopter crash blamed on corroded part

The gyrocopter crash that killed its pilot and a 13-year-old passenger in Reserve was caused by a crack in a single part, according to a report released last week by the National Transportation Safety Board. In addition, the June 1 report says the pilot had little experience flying a gyroplane and might have been drowsy from taking allergy medication.
The pilot was identified as Darren Mahler of Metairie, his passenger as a family friend and neighbor, Payton Wilt. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
