NOPD makes arrest in fatal I-10 high-rise hit-and-run investigation

New Orleans police arrested a 44-year-old man Saturday evening for his alleged involvement in a multiple car pile-up that sent a 29-year-old woman and her 2-year-old nephew falling off the Interstate 10 high rise bridge in eastern New Orleans a week ago.
New Orleans police arrested a 44-year-old man Saturday evening for his alleged involvement in a multiple car pile-up that sent a 29-year-old woman and her 2-year-old nephew falling off the Interstate 10 high rise bridge in eastern New Orleans a week ago. Police booked Ervin Freeman into Central Lockup around 9 p.m. with two counts of manslaughter and one count of felony hit-and-run. Police said in a statement that Freeman confessed to driving the Ford truck in the early hours of Nov. 24 that struck Danielle Rhone and her nephew, Kaedan Boyd, as they walked along the bridge after their car broke down. Rhone died at the scene; Boyd died later at an unnamed hospital. A NOPD spokesman, said the department will provide more details later today. Rhone and Boyd had become stranded around 1:10 a.m. when their dark-colored Chevy Impala stopped running on the bridge, which spans the Industrial Canal. After they left their car, a Ford truck struck a Chevy Tahoe nearby, setting off a chain reaction of crashes that ended with a vehicle hitting Rhone and Boyd, according to police. Several vehicles remained on the scene afterward, but the driver of the Ford truck had left before police arrived, according to earlier reports. At the time, police said other drivers involved in the crashes were believed to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
