Passer-by crawls into submerged SUV, rescues baby by cutting straps off car seat

McGouldrick and two other passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from a hospital.

Passerby Revives Unresponsive Infant After Crash

A passerby who recently completed a refresher CPR course is credited with saving the life of a 3-month-old girl after the vehicle she was riding in landed upside down in a stream in Washington County.
On Monday, Stephen McGouldrick, 55, slid on ice and lost control of his SUV on an icy road and rolled the vehicle down an embankment into 2 1/2 feet of water, landing upside-down and sumberging a 3-month-old infant girl in the back seat. Passerby Leo Moody, of Kingman, crawled into the SUV and freed the baby by using a knife to cut the straps of her car seat. The baby girl was not breathing and unresponsive when she was pulled free, and another passer-by, Wade Shorey, initiated CPR and successfully resuscitated her. The baby was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for observation.
