One man dead in Route 291 crash

The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section investigated the crash. Andrews said charges, including operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, will be filed against the driver later this morning.

The passenger in a vehicle traveling on Route 291 died early Sunday when the car he was riding in drifted into the breakdown lane and collided with a disabled tractor trailer truck.

State Police Sgt. Michael Andrews said the vehicle in which the victim was a passenger was traveling eastbound on Route 291 at approximately 1 a.m. when the car drifted to the right into the breakdown lane. A tractor trailer truck with mechanical problems was stopped near the St. James Avenue exit of the highway, and the car crashed into the rear of the truck, killing the passenger on impact.

The driver of the car was taken to the Baystate Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and later released.

The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section investigated the crash. Andrews said charges will be filed against the driver later this morning.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.
